Climb mountains, gaze at the stars from an alpine refuge, and make new, life-long friends as you challenge yourself to explore new horizons.

Join Sunshine and a small group of outdoor enthusiasts for the hiking tour of a lifetime.

A tour designed for the type of person that feels most alive when they are outdoors or in the mountains; the idea of this journey is to immerse yourself in the wonders of the Pale Mountains: step by step, trail by trail, and peak by peak.

Travel along with Sunshine through the best of both the eastern and western Dolomites. Over the course of eight nights and nine days you will make new friends as you climb through some of the most beautiful mountains in Europe, go whitewater rafting through turbulent meltwaters, spend the night in a mountain refuge, and enjoy the unique blend of cultures particular to Northern Italy.

While this tour is not for the armchair-admirer of nature, don’t be dismayed: you will also have time to relax and take in the view. There will be some long hikes and hard walking, but you will also enjoy making cheese, tasting local wines, riding up to peaks in a cable car, and relaxing for an afternoon at a mountain spa. Mission

Guided by the image of the Incarnation, that “God was made flesh and dwelt among us” in order that we might become like Him, a pilgrimage is more than a trip to the places of the bible, to the sites of the early church, or to the homes of the saints, it is a journey that seeks to place the image of Christ in us that we might be made more like Him.

Approach

The antidote to consumer travel, the goal of pilgrimage is for travelers to stand as Moses before the burning bush, to be transformed, and to have their own lives taken up and changed by the spiritual realities they seek.

Each day will incorporate suggested readings from scripture and the writings of the early church, time for private or shared reflection and prayer, and meals that celebrate the joy of God in neighbor.

A prayerful understanding of place

For Christians, place is never just the created, natural order, nor is it pure, spiritual reality, it must always be both. A pilgrimage encounter with place must both seek God in place, in the finite and particular, through the lives and examples of the Saints and it must require travelers to take those footsteps themselves, each traveler must seek to move through place to God. From this perspective, pilgrimage is an image of prayer, it seeks to turn the body, the footsteps, the act of every traveler into the image of prayer.

BIBLICAL TURKEY

The modern country is the geographic center of many of the events of the bible and early church. It is in in Turkey that Abraham circumcised Isaac, that Jacob wrestled the angel, that Paul and Peter founded the church of Antioch, that Byzantine Christianity thrived for more than thousand years, and to this day it is the home of the Armenian Apostolic tradition, the Assyrian church, and it is the only county where Aramaic, the language of Christ, is still spoken.

Mission

To challenge the apathy and aimlessness of our current cultural moment with mental discipline and rigorous training.

Activities

• Early morning workouts
• Rucking
• Pre-dawn Mount Kerkis hike
• Hike to Cave of Pythagoras
• Underwater rock hauling
• Megalo Seitani hike
• Ice baths
• Roasted lamb or goat on a spit
• Big meals with an abundance of food, roasted meats, wine, toasts, and a spirit of fellowship and conviviality

A PILATES APPROACH TO PUGLIA

Self care doesn’t just mean pampering, it means intentionality. Pilates trains your body to make intelligent movements that support your body all day, every day. Travel encourages a perspective of vulnerability, of stepping into the new and beautiful in order to rediscover the new and beautiful within yourself. From this perspective, an experience of the ‘importance of place’ in Puglia is equally to realize that connectedness within yourself.

When should I buy my tickets and for which dates?

This tour is confirmed and travelers may purchase flight tickets upon making their deposit.  We recommend leaving the USA on Friday, June 14th in order to arrive in Venice (VCE) on June 15th, but you may wish to arrive earlier in order to adjust to the time change. Will there be an airport transfer on arrival and departure?

On June 15th we will provide two airport transfers between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm to Moena--where we'll stay for the first 4 nights.

On the morning of June 23rd we will also provide a transfer from Cortina to Venice Airport.

Is a visa required to enter Europe?

US citizens are currently not required to apply for a visa in order to enter the European Union.

How much is the deposit and is it refundable?

The deposit is $1,000 and is fully refundable within 30 days of payment.

Are payment plans available?

Yes, payment plans are available as long as full payment is made by the start of the tour. Once you have paid the deposit, write to explore@alitheatravel.com or respond to the tour confirmation email to request a custom payment plan.

Will Sunshine be guiding the tour or just traveling with the group?

Sunshine will be an active participant throughout the tour (including all of the hikes), but we will also have a certified local guide for the entire journey. Sunshine will, of course, document and film most activities, hikes, and hotels.

I'm traveling alone, can I choose to share a room with another traveler to avoid the single supplement?

Sharing a room with a travel partner can help lower the accommodation costs. If you wish to share a room with a fellow, same-sex traveler, you can choose this option upon reserving your spot and paying a deposit. We cannot guarantee matching each person with a roommate, but we will do our best. Single occupancy rooms will always incur the single supplement fee.

I'm traveling with one friend, but we will pay our deposits separately. Can we still travel together and avoid the single supplement fee?

Sure thing. Sign up and send us a note. We'll make sure you room together.

Will there be a lot of free time for independent exploration?

This is a full itinerary that visits many of the highlights of the Dolomites in just eight days. Whenever possible your guide will provide time to relax and enjoy a glass or have a conversation with new friends. Day four has been designed as a rest day, but we also encourage you to take the time to explore Moena independently.

What additional expenses should I budget for this trip?

All activities except for the optional Via Ferrata are included in the cost of the trip. All breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 7 dinners are included, but you will want to bring spending money for souvenirs and for meals and snacks not included in the itinerary.

How physically demanding will the hiking be? How can I know if I am physically prepared for all of the walking?

Except for a few trail sections, the walking and hiking itself will not be that challenging. In terms of sheer time spent on the trail, however—up to 7 hours some days—you should have the endurance and stamina not only to complete, but to enjoy, the long hikes.

If you are comfortable walking a maximum of 10-12 miles on flat terrain in one day then you should be physically prepared for the hiking on this tour.

What is the average mileage covered per day?

The average mileage per day will be approximately 7 miles, which is not excessive, but trail hiking is more difficult than flat terrain.

TOUR TIPS

Pack Light

The hotels on our tour are boutique, family-run and centrally located in the historic centers where the narrow roads are too small for buses. That often means having to walk between our bus and hotels. Between destinations we will be required to carry our own luggage which may include significant stairs and no elevator. We encourage our travelers to take a simple carry-on size bag with a small backpack for hiking.

Come Prepared

Be prepared to live in the moment. We will walk, talk, celebrate, dine, and climb mountains together. When we’re not exploring with our local guide we’ll be encouraged to venture out on our own, to celebrate our triumphs with a glass of wine, or simply to relax and take in the beautiful views. Of course, we can’t visit beautiful mountain vistas and alpine lakes without getting there first, and sometimes that means quite a lot of walking. There will be several days on this tour that will be physically demanding due to the amount of hiking. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns before booking.

Bus and Travel Time

Like every great story, there is no possibility of discovery and of arriving at beautiful places without a journey to get there. On our journey through the Dolomites we will take the bus from our hub in Moena or Cortina in order to reach hiking trails and other activities. We’ll not only use this time to relax and enjoy the view but also to prepare with our Alithea guide for the sites we’ll visit next. While the mountains offer gorgeous vistas keep in mind that the roads are extremely windy and full of switchbacks.
