A Ten Day Ralstonian Journey through Italy

Explore Beauty, the theme of Ralston’s 2026–27 MA in the Humanities, through the art, architecture, literature, landscapes, and living traditions of Italy. Traveling through Umbria, Florence, and Rome, we will consider not only how beauty has been understood across the Western tradition, but how it can be experienced, transmitted, and embodied in the pursuit of better living.

Virtue
The central theme of conversation and the moving force of all trip activities will be virtue. Considered, not only from the perspective of Antiquity, the Medieval, and the Renaissance, but also how it can be taught, and lived. The central goal of this journey is not deeper understanding but better living.
First Sources
From Virgil and St. Thomas to Michelangelo and Brunelleschi, these ten days in Italy will provide direct encounters with the work of the great figures of classical education, not in the classroom, but in the actual places they lived and the sites where their work survives today.
The Ficus, the Duomo, & Rome's Oldest Bridge
Crossing Rome's oldest bridge and seeing the site where Romulus and Remus were saved by the shepherd near the ficus, like ascending the Duomo, or entering the Chiesa di Santa Margherita dei Cerchi where Dante first saw Beatrice opens the doors to the imagination and invigorates learning with wonder
Fellowship
Gathering with fellow educators for contemplation and conversation, shared meals and enjoyment of all the gifts of history, provides the context for colleagues to be transformed into friends.
Beauty
Is it possible to spend ten days traveling through Italy and considering virtue without letting the beautiful illuminate the horizon of each day like the rising of the sun. We think that even the gelato is more beautiful in Italy.
