Hike Switzerland’s iconic trails, watch sunsets from mountain huts surrounded by legendary peaks, and share laughter on trails that will stay with you long after the journey ends.

Join a small group of outdoor enthusiasts for an unforgettable hiking journey through Switzerland.

This adventure is designed for those who feel most alive when surrounded by mountains, fresh alpine air, and the spirit of exploration. The goal of this journey is to immerse yourself in the beauty of Switzerland: step by step, ridge by ridge, and summit by summit.

Over the course of seven nights and eight days, we’ll travel through some of Switzerland’s most breathtaking regions: wander the lakeside streets of Lucerne, ride gondolas and luge tracks on Mount Pilatus, traverse the dramatic Stoos ridgeline, and spend nights in cozy alpine huts under starlit skies. We’ll descend into the Lauterbrunnen Valley, a place so magical it inspired many great romantic poet, such as Byron and Goethe. It is a hidden valley where waterfalls tumble from towering cliffs, and we hike along its panoramic trails beneath the shadow of the Eiger. For those seeking extra adventure, options like a via ferrata or tandem paragliding add an unforgettable thrill.

While the mountains will challenge and inspire you, this tour is also about connection—sharing hearty meals in mountain huts, cheering each other on during ridge hikes, and laughing together on the mountain carts in Grindelwald. Along the way, there’s time to pause, breathe, and take in the magic of Switzerland’s landscapes.

Pack your boots and your sense of wonder. This is not just a hike—it’s a journey through peaks and valleys that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Itinerary

Day 1

Lakeside Arrival in Lucerne

  • Arrival by 4:00 pm
  • Hotel check-in
  • Orientation walk in Lucerne’s Old Town
  • Group dinner and optional walk along Lake Lucerne

Arrive in Lucerne, a city where lake and mountains meet. After checking into our special hotel in the medieval old town, we’ll gather for a short orientation stroll through the cobblestone streets and iconic wooden bridges. The hotel itself is a fascinating experiment: once a medieval prison, it has been transformed into a modern and inviting hospitality space. We’ll share dinner at a local restaurant, and those who wish can enjoy a peaceful evening walk along the lakeshore before resting up for the adventure ahead.

Day 2

Pilatus Peaks & Stoos Ridge Panorama

  • Gondola from Kriens to Fräkmüntegg
  • Ride the summer luge track
  • Summit Pilatus Kulm (2,128 m)
  • Transfer to Stoos, funicular + chairlift to Klingenstock
  • Hike ridge trail to Fronalpstock
  • Return to Lucerne

Today blends astounding infrastructure, adrenaline and alpine views. We’ll start with a gondola ride to Fräkmüntegg where you can try the thrilling summer luge before continuing to the summit of Pilatus for sweeping views. In the afternoon, we’ll journey to Stoos and ascend to the ridge, hiking the breathtaking trail from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock—one of Switzerland’s finest panoramic walks. The evening will see us back in Lucerne, enjoying the comforts of our medieval home one more time.

Day 3

Hut-to-Hut Adventure in Engelberg

  • Transfer to Engelberg
  • Begin hut-to-hut hike
  • Overnight at Kreuzhütte mountain hut

Leaving Lucerne, we head deep into the Engelberg Valley to begin our hut-to-hut adventure. Ascending via gondola to a ridge first, the trail climbs steadily through alpine pastures and forests before reaching the “Chrüzhütte” (Crucifix mountain hut), where a hearty meal and cozy alpine camaraderie await amongst the mountain tops.

Day 4

Across the Alpine Heights

  • Continue trek through the Engelberg highlands
  • Optional via ferrata experience (weather permitting)
  • Overnight in mountain hut or Engelberg valley

Our second day of hiking takes us along rugged high alpine paths with sweeping views of snow-dusted peaks and turquoise mountain lakes. If conditions allow, we’ll have the chance to try an optional via ferrata before dinner and a well-deserved rest.
Depending on weather and hut availability, we may spend the night in a mountain hut or descend to the Engelberg valley — home of the monks of the “Angel Mountain.” Either way, the alpine charm and quiet beauty of the evening remain the same.

Walking: 5–7 miles, ascent & descent
Overnight: mountain hut or Engelberg valley

Day 5

Descent & Transfer to Lauterbrunnen

  • Descend toward Bannalp
  • Transfer to Lauterbrunnen
  • Evening valley walk or gondola to Schilthorn (weather permitting)
  • Group dinner in the valley

We descend through Engelberg’s alpine meadows to complete our hut-to-hut trek, then transfer to the Lauterbrunnen Valley — famed for its 72 waterfalls and said to have inspired Tolkien’s Rivendell.
If skies are clear, we’ll ascend to the Schilthorn, setting of the James Bond classic On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, to watch the sunset over the dramatic skyline of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Dinner awaits back in the valley.

Walking: 3–4 miles downhill
Transfers: 2 hours
Overnight: Lauterbrunnen

Day 6

High Mountain Trails & Optional Adventures

  • Gondola to Winteregg, hike to Mürren
  • Optional Mürren Via Ferrata (guided) or tandem paragliding
  • Overnight in Lauterbrunnen

A classic high-mountain trail leads us from Winteregg to Mürren, perched on a sun-drenched terrace above the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
In the afternoon, choose your own kind of adventure: challenge yourself on the thrilling Mürren Via Ferrata — suspended along cliffs above the valley — or take to the skies on a tandem paragliding flight over one of the most spectacular alpine landscapes in the world.

Walking: 3–4 miles
Optional activities: via ferrata or paragliding
Overnight: Lauterbrunnen

Day 7

Jungfrau Panorama & Grindelwald Adventure

  • Cable car to Männlichen
  • Hike Panorama Trail to Kleine Scheidegg
  • Afternoon at Grindelwald First: mountain carts, zipline, Cliff Walk

A Christian Classical Approach to Travel
Travel encourages a living experience of art, history, and ideas that transforms the classroom into an immersive experience of truth, beauty, and goodness. Museums, meals, archeological sites, and foreign languages are not merely artifacts that help students consider the world, they cultivate a love of wonder, moral imagination, and a rich understanding of the truth. More than a student trip, travel is an invitation to become a lifelong practitioner of the loves that shape the soul.
The Prayerful Traditions of Europe
Rather than treating churches and monasteries as defunct historical monuments, Alithea and Oakdale Academy invite students to approach them as places of prayer and worship
